Do you know the pets that you can legally own in India? Other than some highly endangered species, you can own a whole range of pets from the ordinary to the exotic in India as long as you make a declaration about their possession to the relevant authorities.

The Indian Constitution has also incorporated provisions, which recognise the right to own pets. Animals that can be domestically found and are allowed to be kept as pets include dogs, cats, poultry, pigeons, parrots, finches, fish reared in aquarium, horses, pigs, rabbits, ponies and cattle. But you cannot keep rodents, parakeets, turtles and bears. Guinea pigs, pygmy marmosets (a small monkey), Fennec Fox (one of the smallest foxes), iguanas, and sugar gliders are some of the exotic pets that you can own in India.

The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) had issued a circular codifying rights of pet animals.
    They include

  • Dogs are allowed to bark. The society has to bear with the barking sound of dogs.
  • Pets are entitled to regular vaccination, sterilisation and adequate health care.
  • Pets have the right to enter lifts or elevators
  • Pets have the right to enter gardens or parks.
  • Pets should not be subjected to any cruelty.
